Update on Adirondack Brook Trout

Well, I went fishing yesterday in the Adirondacks for brook trout.  Unfortunatly there were no black flies.  Therefore, the fishing conditions were awesome because I did not have to wear bug dope and the weather was beautiful.... however, not one brook trout was rolled the entire day.

The old timers at coffee today said that when the witch hopple bushes have leaves on them the size of a mouses ear, the brook trout will be bitting.  In short, there were only buds on the trees, nothing opening yet.

On a side note.  The suckers are beginning to run and that means the season is right on track.

For those of you looking for smelt... there were still a few runs last night... which is a little late for the season, but the cold nights are allowing the fish to continue to run.

Lake trout are still shallow and as I write this, I can see a few fish rolling just off shore.  The perch will also be spawning if you are looking for some fun with the kids.

I hope this is a good update for you all that want to fish the Adirondacks.  In summary.  If you want lake trout.... go NOW... if you want brook trout, stay home and tie up some green stoneflies and Hendricksons.  You got two weeks.
